On Monday, the Supreme Court overturned a Delhi High Court decision that permitted Rapido and Uber, two-wheeler bike-taxi aggregators, to operate without aggregator licenses until the final policy was announced.
The Supreme Court's decision now requires the bike-taxi aggregators to obtain the necessary licenses to continue operating in Delhi.
The Delhi government has assured the apex court that comprehensive guidelines and a licensing policy for bike aggregators will be implemented. The objective is to regulate the operations of bike aggregators effectively, with the measures expected to be formulated by July 31.
A vacation bench consisting of Justices Aniruddha Bose and Rajesh Bindal has granted the two aggregators the freedom to request an urgent hearing of their plea by the Delhi High Court. The bench has temporarily halted the implementation of the high court's May 26 order.
The Supreme Court was considering two separate petitions filed by the AAP government, which contested the High Court's May 26 order directing the government not to take any coercive measures against the bike-taxi aggregators until the final policy was released.
