Prime Minister Modi inaugurated the Veer Savarkar International Airport's new integrated terminal building (NITB) in Port Blair, Andaman and Nicobar.
The terminal building, designed in the shape of a shell to represent the islands' natural surroundings, will provide ample natural lighting for 12 hours a day through strategically placed skylights on the roof.
To minimize its environmental impact, the terminal incorporates rainwater collection in an underground tank, an on-site sewage treatment plant that reuses 100% of treated wastewater for landscaping, and a 500 KW solar power plant.
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) undertook the construction of the New Integrated Terminal Building (NITB) due to increased passenger traffic, at an estimated cost of Rs 707.73 crores.
With a total area of 40,837 square meters, the newly constructed terminal building has the capacity to accommodate 1,200 passengers during peak hours and approximately 40 lakh passengers annually.
The newly constructed three-storey building features 28 check-in counters, along with three passenger boarding bridges and four conveyor belts.
