The Yamuna authority has approved India’s first Pod taxi project which will cover the distance of 14.6 kilometres from the Jewar airport to Film City. The project is expected to cost around 810 crores and construction will begin after the approval of the Uttar Pradesh government.

The global tenders for the same are to be expected within a week, said Arun Vir Singh, YEIDA CEO. A concessionaire will be selected within a week, he added.

“There are hardly five to six companies that have expertise in developing pod taxi systems and so far, all of them have expressed interest in this project” Singh said, adding that all land acquisition for the project has been done.

On Wednesday the Indian Port Rail and Ropeway Corporation Limited handed over the operation report of pod taxis of three countries to the Yamuna Authority.

According to the officials involved in this project, pod taxis were started in 18 countries worldwide. It is currently operating in five countries. Citing the 2011-12 report, the officials said that London's pod taxis are running profitably while Abu Dhabi's project is running at a loss.

The pod taxis are expected to have a capacity of 37,000 passengers per day. While some people are showing appreciation and excitement for the project, others are saying that this is a waste of tax payers money.
