Hyderabad is now home to India's first solar cycling track. The 23-km long track, featuring three lanes and generating 16 MW of solar power, is the second of its kind globally, following South Korea's solar rooftop-covered track.
Other solar cycling tracks are currently being constructed in Dubai and Switzerland.
Starting from October 2, the entire track, named Healthway, was made accessible 24/7. It consists of two lines: the pink line, covering 8.5 km from Nanakramguda to Telangana State Police Academy (TSPA), and the blue line, stretching 14.5 km from Narsinghi hub to Kollur.
Featuring three dedicated lanes and protected on both sides, the track ensures complete safety for cyclists. During its inauguration, K.T. Rama Rao, the Telangana Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister, emphasized the uniqueness of the Hyderabad track in terms of its design and concept, distinguishing it from other cycling tracks worldwide.
Featuring 5 access points with amenities like parking, food stalls, and repair stations, the track also boasts 16,000 solar panels generating 16 MW of power, significantly reducing electricity costs for the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA).
This solar power is equivalent to 32,000 street lights or 800 km of street lighting, and it typically requires 52 acres of land. The strategically positioned lighting enhances the cityscape and allows cyclists to use the track round the clock, monitored 24/7 by CCTVs connected to the Cyberabad police command center.
