Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) has taken a major step towards making air travel more comfortable for all passengers. The airport has introduced a specially designed sensory room for neurodivergent passengers and those with sensory sensitivity issues. This is the first facility of its kind in India and highlights the airport’s commitment to providing a stress-free experience for travellers.
A safe and calming space for passengers
The sensory room is on Level 4 of Terminal 2, near the 080 International Lounge. It is made for people who find airports stressful because of bright lights, loud sounds, and big crowds. Some passengers, like those with autism, sensory processing disorder (SPD), anxiety, or PTSD, may feel uncomfortable in such busy places.
Things like security checks, announcements, and large crowds can make travel even harder for them. To help, Bengaluru Airport has created a quiet and relaxing space where they can feel calm before their flight. Experts say that spending just 15 to 30 minutes in a peaceful environment can help reduce stress and improve mood. This room gives passengers a comfortable place to relax and feel ready for their journey.
Key features of the sensory room
The sensory room at Bengaluru Airport is designed using ideas from behavioural science and occupational therapy to create a peaceful space. It has special features to help passengers feel calm and comfortable.
For a relaxing visual experience, the room has bubble tubes, galaxy projectors, and LED cubes that provide gentle lights. Colourful wall art and murals are also added to create a positive atmosphere. To offer physical comfort, the room includes optical curtains, infinity mirrors, and tactile wall panels that help passengers feel more stable. There are also therapy mats, weighted blankets, and crash pads to help them relax.
To make the space even more soothing, the room has white noise machines and sound systems to reduce background noise. Scent diffusers and aromatherapy equipment are used to create a fresh and calming environment.
This sensory room is not just for neurodivergent passengers but also helps travelers with small children, elderly passengers, and people with mental health concerns. With this thoughtful initiative, Bengaluru Airport is making air travel more comfortable and stress-free for everyone.
