India's External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar has highlighted ongoing talks between India and Bhutan regarding the establishment of a railway link between Kokrajhar in Assam and Gelephu in Bhutan. This potential railway connection is expected to significantly enhance trade and tourism ties between the two neighbouring countries.
Jaishankar explained the importance of strengthening border infrastructure and connectivity, citing the Indian government's dedicated efforts in this regard since 2014. He emphasized that the Modi Government has prioritized the development of border regions, aiming to facilitate smoother trade and connectivity.
One of the prominent initiatives discussed was the proposed railway link from Gelephu to Kokrajhar, which is situated on the Assam-Bhutan border. This railway link holds the potential to not only good trade relations but also boost tourism activities between the two nations.
Additionally, the minister addressed the challenges posed by the internal situation in Myanmar, which has impacted various infrastructure projects, including the trilateral highway initiative involving India, Myanmar, and Thailand. The trilateral highway project has been envisioned as a key driver of regional connectivity.
Jaishankar noted that the turmoil in Myanmar has posed obstacles to ongoing infrastructure endeavours, particularly the segment of the trilateral highway that remains under construction, along with the construction of 69 bridges.
Regarding India's connectivity efforts with Bangladesh, Jaishankar emphasized the potential economic benefits of operationalizing the Chattogram and Mongla ports in Bangladesh. This move could greatly contribute to the economic development of the Northeastern states of India and West Bengal.
It remains to be seen how these initiatives will unfold and contribute to the overall socio-economic landscape of the region.
