According to a report, in a move to branch out from China Foxconn is currently planning of assembling the Apple iPads in India . This could be a signal for a big expansion of their operations, which have so far been focused on making only iPhones.
The Taiwanese producer plans to start the manufacturing of iPads in the Sriperumbudur factory in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, which is a proof of its admiration to India's supply chain expansion for Apple products.
Until now, Foxconn, and other foreign contract manufacturers in India have been exclusively engaged in the assembly of Apple’s iPhones.
"Foxconn is quite literally in the process of starting to build Apple’s iPad from its site in Tamil Nadu," said a person close to the matter and quoted by The Economic Times over the phone.
According to someone, "some rounds of discussions have already happened with the government as well on this". "They are quite happy with the collaboration so far, and they are coming up with a huge effort. They are going to improve what they have in the coming years, which concerns not only iPhone, but also iPads and some other devices," the second source continued.
In addition, the assembly of Mac laptops may take longer periods due to the limited production volumes.
The decision by Apple to shift part of its product production to India in line with its long-term strategy of moving out of China is. Last year, part of the production of the pad was moved to Vietnam by Apple.
As per the ET report, the skills essential to put together an iPad are the same as those for the production of iPhone, whereas the laptops need more complex facilities.
How decisive this decision will be for India can be gauged from the fact that big companies like Foxconn are looking towards India, bypassing giant forces like China. This will be a big boost in the objective of the current government to develop India.
