Adani’s Vizhinjam port welcomes first mega vessel, Cements India’s maritime ambitions

Using a public-private partnership approach, Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd. (APSEZ) constructed the ₹8,867 crore Vizhinjam International Seaport.

The first deep-water trans-shipment port in India, Vizhinjam Port operated by Adani Group, welcomed its maiden mothership on Thursday, marking a significant historical milestone. India has entered the international port business league with the arrival of the gigantic container carrier ‘San Fernando’, which is owned by Maersk, the second-largest shipping corporation in the world.

When the ship ‘San Fernando’ arrived at the port at Kovalam Beach in Kerala, it was greeted with a traditional water salute, carrying more than 2,000 containers. Senior state government officials, including Kerala’s Minister of Ports V.N. Vasavan and Minister of Food and Civil Supplies G.R. Anil, were present at this historic event.

“This Friday (July 12), the Vizhinjam International Seaport in Thiruvananthapuram will host a grand celebration to welcome its first mothership, San Fernando, a Maersk Line Vessel. This event signifies a monumental moment in Kerala’s maritime history and stands as a testament to the unwavering commitment of the Left Democratic Front government to the state’s development,” said Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

Construction of Vizhinjam Port: A Public-Private Partnership

Using a public-private partnership approach, Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd. (APSEZ) constructed the ₹8,867 crore Vizhinjam International Seaport. The Kerala government contributed ₹5,595 crore, while the central government provided ₹818 crore.

When the port is completely operational, it will be able to compete with other world-class ports like Colombo, Singapore, and Jebel Ali. It will also become a global hub for bunkering, delivering green fuels like ammonia and hydrogen.

The Vizhinjam Port, which is ideally situated just 10 nautical miles from the main shipping route that connects Europe, the Persian Gulf, and the Far East, is expected to grow into a significant trans-shipment hub.

“Vizhinjam Port exemplifies a successful public-private partnership, highlighting the potential of collaborative development. Join us in celebrating this historic achievement that marks a new era of progress and prosperity for Kerala,” said Chief Minister Vijayan.

ndia’s First Semi-Automated Container Terminal

The first semi-automated container terminal in India is the Vizhinjam Port, which has cutting-edge technology and a contemporary infrastructure. It is semi-automated because of a few important aspects, such as:

Modern machinery, sophisticated automation, and cutting-edge IT systems are all installed in the port to facilitate the swift and effective turnaround of vessels.

With a natural draft of 18–20 meters, it can accommodate the biggest container ships in the world.

Automated methods for handling and storing containers are only two examples of how the port uses contemporary technology and automation to improve operations.

It is anticipated that the port’s semi-automated structure will enable it to meet international benchmarks for critical performance metrics, such as dwell periods, vessel turnaround, berth productivity, and quay crane productivity.

An important turning point for India’s marine industry was the first mothership’s arrival at Vizhinjam Port, which propelled the nation into the elite group of ports worldwide. This historic occasion serves as a reminder of the potential of public-private cooperation in creating cutting-edge infrastructure and accelerating national economic development.
