A high-level delegation from Bhutan, headed by its King and Prime Minister, visited key Adani Group infrastructure projects at Mundra and Khavda as part of a two-day visit to Gujarat.

The delegation's primary objective was to explore opportunities for extensive collaboration with the Adani Group across various sectors.

Khavda Renewable Energy Park: Pioneering Green Energy Initiatives

In Mundra, the Adani Group operates India's largest commercial port. At Khavda, the group is developing the world's largest renewable energy park. The flagship Mundra Port & SEZ has transformed a previously barren area into India's leading port and a major industrial hub. Now, the group is focusing on green energy, aiming to turn barren land at Khavda into a center for clean and affordable energy as part of its commitment to achieving net-zero emissions.

Discussions during the visit highlighted several areas of mutual interest, including hydropower, transmission lines, urban development projects such as the Gelephu Mindfulness City, the cement industry, green hydrogen, and renewable energy. Bhutan's interest in collaborating on large-scale infrastructure projects aligns with these discussions.

The Adani Group has already signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Druk Green Power Company (DGPC) for the development of the 570 MW Wangchhu Hydropower Project. DGPC officials accompanied the Bhutanese King during the site visits.

Hydropower is crucial to Bhutan's economy, significantly contributing to its GDP and export revenues. Bhutan exports a large portion of its electricity to India, which helps meet India's energy demands. The country has substantial hydropower potential, estimated at around 30,000 MW, with approximately 24,000 MW considered economically feasible. The development of this sector, supported by India since the 1960s, has been vital for Bhutan's economic growth.

The Adani Group has a history of supporting regional sustainable development efforts. Recent collaborations include a 20-year agreement with the Sri Lankan government for wind power stations, marking the largest foreign direct investment and the biggest power project in Sri Lanka's history.

Additionally, the group has started exporting power to Bangladesh from its 1,600 MW Godda Power Plant in Jharkhand, India's first trans-national power project, further enhancing regional energy security and sustainability.
