Ukraine’s Ambassador to India, Oleksandr Polishchuk, has said that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy may visit India soon, with both countries in talks to finalise the dates. The visit comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended an invitation to the Ukrainian President.

Speaking on Ukraine’s National Flag Day, the envoy described the visit as a “big step” in strengthening India-Ukraine relations. He also stated that Kyiv considers India an important partner in peace efforts, particularly due to its ties with Moscow.

Polishchuk stressed that India’s stand on peace and dialogue matches Ukraine’s vision for ending the ongoing conflict with Russia. He recalled PM Modi’s earlier remark that India is “not neutral” but stands on the side of peace and dialogue.

Pointing to the growing ties between the two nations, the Ambassador said relations have improved since 2023, with both sides even exploring a future strategic partnership. He pointed out that PM Modi and President Zelenskyy have held multiple meetings at the UN in the past year.

On global efforts, he said Ukraine remains open to talks, depending on Moscow’s approach and support from Western nations. He mentioned that Zelenskyy recently met US President Donald Trump for peace talks, following Trump’s earlier discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska.

The envoy added that Kyiv hopes India will take a more active role in peace-building, with possible progress during the upcoming UN General Assembly session in September. Recently, President Zelenskyy also sent greetings to PM Modi and the people of India on Independence Day, expressing hope that New Delhi would play a bigger role in restoring peace. Notably, in August 2024, PM Modi visited Ukraine and offered India’s support in finding a peaceful resolution “as a friend.”
