In the West Tripura district, a woman allegedly poured acid on her husband while riding pillion on his motorcycle. Police said the attack took place on Wednesday, leaving the man with severe burn injuries on his face and neck.

The victim has been identified as Shibaji Debbarma, a farmer by profession. He was immediately rushed to the GBP Hospital in Agartala, where doctors confirmed that his condition is stable, though he has sustained visible burns.

According to Himadri Sarkar, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sidhai police station, the incident occurred when Shibaji and his wife, Sumitra Debbarma, were travelling together towards Chandpur on a motorcycle. Without warning, Sumitra suddenly threw acid on her husband while he was driving.

Shocked and in severe pain, Shibaji stopped the bike and fell to the ground, screaming for help. Eyewitnesses from nearby villages rushed to his aid after hearing his cries. “His wife even attempted to pour more acid on him, but before she could, villagers intervened and stopped her,” the police officer said.

The quick response of the locals saved Shibaji from further injuries. He was then shifted to the GBP Hospital for immediate treatment. Police officials also revealed that the motive behind the attack might be linked to domestic violence. Initial investigations suggest that Sumitra may have been a victim of long-term abuse, which could have driven her to carry out the assault.

As of now, no official complaint has been lodged by the victim, as he is still undergoing treatment. Meanwhile, police have launched a search for Sumitra, who fled the scene after the incident and has been absconding since.

“We are closely monitoring the case. The woman is on the run, but we are making efforts to trace her. Only after receiving a formal complaint can further legal steps be taken,” said OC Himadri Sarkar. The shocking attack has sent shockwaves across the local community, raising serious concerns about domestic violence and the increasing use of acid in violent crimes.
