A 33-year-old woman, Reshma Begum died while 20 others suffered food poisoning after consuming momo from a street vendor at various locations in Hyderabad's Banjara Hills area.
Police are currently investigating the situation and indicate that all ten victims who consumed momos were prepared by the same vendor, although they bought them from different stalls within the Banjara Hills police jurisdiction last week.
Reshma Begum and her daughters, aged 12 and 14 went to eat momo from a street vendor in Khairatabad. Soon after eating, they began experiencing symptoms such as diarrhoea, stomach pain, and vomiting. However, Reshma passed away, while her daughters are currently under treatment.
According to the reports of PTI, Ram Babu, Sub-Inspector of Banjara Hills Police Station, stated, "We received a complaint yesterday that Reshma Begum (33) died and 15 others suffered food poisoning after consuming momos from a single vendor at different locations. We have registered a case and are investigating the matter."
The police investigation further revealed that the woman and others ate momo from a stall named ‘Delhi Momos,’ located in Chintal Nasti. The stall was set up three months ago by six men from Bihar. The police have taken those running the stall into custody.
A family member of Reshma Begum, who died after eating momo, complained the police that she fell ill soon after eating the momos and was later admitted to the hospital.
A resident recalled the incident and told the reporters that Reshma began showing symptoms of food poisoning just an hour after eating and was admitted to hospital where she died.
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has started an investigation into the vendor's operations. Food safety officials, working along with the police, mentioned the stall and found that it was operating without any licence. The food was being prepared in very unhygienic conditions, with dough stored in the refrigerator without any packaging. This raised serious concerns about food safety and sanitation practices at the stall. Authorities have also warned people from consuming food from such vendors.
