After the deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 people, the Indian government has decided to take strong safety steps. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has asked all states and union territories to conduct mock security drills on Wednesday. These drills will help people and authorities prepare for emergencies like air raids or enemy attacks.
A review meeting was held at the Home Ministry to check how prepared 244 districts are. These districts include those close to borders and major cities. Officials checked if civil defence shelters, warning systems, and control rooms are working or need repairs. During the mock drills, civilians will also be trained on how to stay safe during emergencies.
According to the Home Ministry, the drills will include air raid sirens, blackout procedures, and evacuation plans. Sources said people will be advised to keep medical kits, candles, torches, and extra cash at home in case digital payments or phones stop working.
Over 100 out of the 244 districts have been marked as very sensitive. “New and complex threats” were the reason behind these drills, the ministry said.
Pakistan link suspected in attack, PM promises strong action
The government has promised to act strongly against the attackers. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said those responsible will be punished “beyond their imagination” and “pursued to the ends of the earth”.
While Pakistan has denied any role in the April 22 attack, Indian officials say early investigations point to the involvement of Pakistan-based terror groups.
The government has already suspended the Indus Waters Treaty and held multiple high-level security meetings with ministers and military leaders. These steps show that India is preparing seriously for any possible situation with Pakistan.
The mock drills are being done to make sure both people and officials are ready if there is any attack in the future.
