Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on the occasion of the 79th Raising Day celebrations of Delhi Police that since the removal of Article 370 in August 2019, incidents of violence in Kashmir, the North-East and Maoist-affected areas have fallen sharply by about 80%, claiming this as a major achievement for India’s internal security strategy. He made the remarks while addressing senior police officials and personnel at the Delhi Police headquarters, emphasising that efforts to eradicate insurgency and extremist activities in key regions are yielding measurable results.
Shah described the reduction in violence as a result of coordinated action by security forces, enhanced intelligence, and policy reforms aimed at integrating restive regions more closely with the rest of the country. He said the abrogation of Article 370, which ended the special constitutional status of Jammu and Kashmir, brought the region directly under the full jurisdiction of the Indian Constitution and laid the foundation for improved law and order and development efforts in the Union Territory. While detailing progress, Shah expressed confidence that the day is not far when these violence-prone areas will be completely free from conflict and disruption.
In the same address, Shah also told about the broader achievements of the Home Ministry, including plans to strengthen counter-terror infrastructure and modernise policing capabilities in the national capital. He pointed to ongoing projects such as a new integrated headquarters for the Delhi Police Special Cell and the Safe City Project, which aim to enhance operational efficiency and public safety. His comments reflect the government’s emphasis on linking constitutional changes, security operations and development schemes to deliver peace and stability in regions long affected by insurgency and unrest.
The assertions about reduced violence since the constitutional change align with previous government statements attributing lower insurgent activity and militant incidents to the post-abrogation security framework, though independent analyses vary on interpreting long-term trends.
