Vikas Dubey was arrested in Ujjain on Thursday outside Mahakal Temple

“After being chased by the police team, he was asked to surrender but he did not and started firing with the intention of killing them. The police team fired back in self-defence after which Vikas Dubey was injured. He was taken to a hospital, where he died during treatment,” Kanpur Police said in a statement.

Assistant Superintendent of Police, Kanpur, Dr Anil Kumar said a police team consisting of officials from UP’s Special Task Force (STF) and Kanpur police were bringing Dubey on a transit remand to Kanpur. The incident took place at around 7 am between Jhansi and Kanpur.

Dubey was arrested in Ujjain on Thursday from the Mahakaleshwar temple. He had been on the run since July 3 when police tried to raid his village, Bikru, near Kanpur. Since then, the police have killed five of his close aides, including his personal bodyguard.

There were 62 criminal cases lodged against Dubey in Uttar Pradesh, including five cases of murder and eight cases of attempt to murder.

Political Reactions:

But despite the ‘story’ of police, this seemed more of a well-propagated scenario to bury the evidence of what might the gangster could reveal in the court procedures.
