In a recent meeting, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) decided to change the name of a road in Vasant Vihar to Jamaica Marg. This decision was made during a discussion. The road goes from B-9 Road at Vasant Marg (House No. 7) to B-8 Street (House No. B-8/26). Before this, the road was called Marcus Garvey Marg, which honoured Marcus Mosiah Garvey, who was Jamaica's first national hero and an important activist.
Jamaican High Commission sent a letter suggesting the change
The renaming of Vasant Vihar Road to Jamaica Marg is seen as a sign of friendship between India and Jamaica. It is meant to make the bond and trust between the two countries stronger. The proposal shows how important it is for both countries to respect each other and work together. It reflects a promise to build good relationships on an international level.
According to the report of PTI, the idea to change the road's name came from the Jamaican High Commission. They sent a letter to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) in September, suggesting the change. The High Commissioner of Jamaica said that changing the name to Jamaica Marg instead of Marcus Garvey Marg would honour the strong relationship between India and Jamaica.
In reply, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) agreed with the idea to change the road's name. They said that this change matches the honour given to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar by the Jamaican government, which renamed Tower Street in Kingston after him. This action shows the mutual respect and friendship between India and Jamaica.
Along with changing the name to Jamaica Marg, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has also decided to name another main road. This road will go from the Bhalaswa flyover to ITI Road in Jahangirpuri and Harijan Colony. It will be called Late Gokul Chand Marg to honour a local social worker and community leader.
