OYO, a travel booking platform known for being couple-friendly, has introduced changes to its check-in policy for unmarried couples in Meerut. Starting this year, couples may no longer be permitted to check in together at OYO-partnered hotels in the city.

According to the updated guidelines, OYO has granted its partner hotels the discretion to accept or reject couple bookings based on their judgment, considering local social norms. Apart from this, couples must provide valid proof of relationship during check-in, including for online reservations.

Pawas Sharma, the Region Head for OYO North India, was quoted by PTI as saying, “OYO is committed to upholding safe and responsible hospitality practices. While we respect individual freedoms and personal liberty, we also recognise our responsibility to listen to and collaborate with law enforcement and civil society groups in the micro markets we operate in.”

According to PTI, based on feedback from the ground, OYO may extend this policy to other cities. The initiative is part of the company's broader program aimed at reshaping its image and positioning itself as a brand that offers a safe experience for families, students, business travellers, religious visitors, and solo travellers.

A company statement says that OYO has launched pan-India initiatives focused on safe hospitality, in collaboration with police and hotel partners. These efforts include blacklisting hotels reportedly involved in immoral activities and taking action against unauthorized hotels that are using the OYO brand without permission.
