US President Donald Trump has announced that trade talks between the United States and India have resumed. “I am pleased to announce that India and the United States of America are continuing negotiations to address the Trade Barriers between our two Nations,” he posted on Truth Social.

Trump described Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “very good friend” and said he is looking forward to speaking with him “in the upcoming weeks.” He added, “I feel certain that there will be no difficulty in coming to a successful conclusion for both of our great countries.”

This statement comes after the US recently softened its tone toward India. On Friday, during a White House press conference, Trump said, “I’ll always be friends with Prime Minister Modi” and called him a "great Prime Minister." He also reassured, “India and the United States have a special relationship. There’s nothing to worry about.”

Hours after Trump’s remarks, PM Modi responded on X, saying he appreciates and fully reciprocates Trump’s comments. “Deeply appreciate and fully reciprocate President Trump's sentiments and positive assessment of our ties. India and the US have a very positive and forward-looking Comprehensive and Global Strategic Partnership,” Modi wrote.

Indian Ambassador to the United States Vinay Kwatra also met US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Allison Hooker on Monday. Sharing a picture of the meeting on X, Ambassador Kwatra called it a “productive discussion.” He added, “Echoed the sentiments of our leaders. Both sides remain engaged through our ongoing bilateral and Quad initiatives, under the forward-looking India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership.”

The announcement comes after Trump imposed 50 percent tariffs on Indian imports on August 27. This move doubled the previous 25 per cent tariff, following India’s continued purchase of Russian oil amid the Ukraine conflict
