In 2024, the Google Year in Search report revealed that the most common search among Indian users was "AQI near me," pointing out growing concerns about air quality. Other popular searches included "Onam Sandhya near me," "Ram Mandir near me," "Sports bars near me," "Best bakery," "Trendy cafes," "Polio drops," "Shiv temple," "Best coffee," and "Hanuman movie near me."
The AQI-related search remained at the top of the search list, reflecting growing concerns about deteriorating air quality and its impact on health, especially in cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Lucknow, where AQI levels often reach alarming levels.
The post-monsoon season in North India has been challenging due to stubble burning in Punjab and Haryana, combined with vehicle exhaust and industrial pollution, which caused heavy smog. In Delhi, the AQI frequently surpassed 400, resulting in school closures and a rise in hospital visits for respiratory issues.
Other cities like Bengaluru and Hyderabad, which usually witness less pollution, have also seen a rise in AQI levels due to rapid growth, construction dust, and more vehicles. Coastal cities like Mumbai faced extra pollution from industrial emissions and port activities.
Apart from environmental concerns, people's searches covered a wide range of topics. They looked up festivals, landmarks, food trends, and entertainment. Some searches were political, like "How to vote in Lok Sabha," while others were more fun, such as "Pookie meaning" and "Moye Moye." The global Palestine conflict also caught attention, with many Indians searching for "All Eyes on Rafah."
