Amit Sinha, a physical education teacher at a government school in Bihar's Bhagalpur district, shared his story about why he works as a delivery boy for Zomato. Sinha said that he earns only Rs 8,000 a month as a school teacher, so to support his family, he works as a Zomato delivery executive every night after his school shift.

He finishes his work at Babupur Middle School by 5 pm and then begins delivering food until midnight. Narrating his story to India Today, Sinha said he secured a government job as a teacher in 2022 after waiting for nearly four years. It was also around the time when he got married.

Sinha said his family was so happy when he got the job. He gave the exam in 2019, and the results came out in February 2020 where he scored 74 out of 100. Before this, he had also worked at a private school, but  lost the job due to the Covid-19 pandemic.”

"Finally, in 2022, I got the government school job, but my salary was only Rs 8,000 because I was hired as a part-time teacher, not a full-time one”, said Sinha.

Sinha noted that even though his students have won medals and recognition at sports events due to his coaching, the authorities have neither raised his salary nor conducted any eligibility tests.

He said, "The former teachers were paid up to Rs 42,000, but we only receive Rs 8,000. From February to May, we didn’t receive any pay. The financial situation became so difficult that I had to borrow money from friends, but I couldn't pay them back."

On his wife's suggestion, Sinha found online that he could work as a delivery executive. There were no set hours for this job therefore he created an account on the platform and started working daily from 5 pm to 1 am.

Sinha shared that he is struggling to manage two jobs to make ends meet for his family, as he is the eldest son and has to take care of his elderly mother.

Due to the low income from the school, Sinha was unable to meet his family's needs and decided to work as a delivery boy after school hours. He added, "If I can't feed myself properly, how can I take care of my family?"
