Tahawwur Hussain Rana, a key accused in the 2008 Mumbai terror attack case, is soon going to be brought to India from the United States. Sources from the prison said he will likely be kept in a high-security ward in Tihar Jail once he arrives.
The authorities have already made the necessary arrangements for his stay. However, they are waiting for a court order before taking the final step. Officials confirmed that a special team has gone to the US to bring Rana to India.
Rana, who is 64 years old, was born in Pakistan but is a Canadian citizen. He is also known to be a close associate of David Coleman Headley, one of the main planners behind the Mumbai terror attacks. Headley, also known as Daood Gilani, is a US citizen.
Rana had tried to stop his extradition by filing a request in the US Supreme Court. But the court rejected his application. With this, his last chance to stay in the US failed.
The Mumbai terror attacks took place on November 26, 2008, when 10 Pakistani terrorists entered Mumbai using the sea route.
They attacked a railway station, two luxury hotels, and a Jewish centre. The attack lasted nearly 60 hours and killed 166 people, shocking the entire nation.
