A growing health concern is catching the attention of many, and it's centered around a body part often overlooked the glutes. Dead Butt Syndrome, or gluteal amnesia, is a condition where the muscles in your butt essentially "forget" how to function due to inactivity. Dr. Ashis Acharya, Senior Consultant in Orthopedics and Sports Medicine at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi, emphasizes the importance of these muscles for maintaining proper body alignment. When they become weak, it can trigger a series of problems, including back pain, hip discomfort, and knee issues.

The primary cause? Prolonged sitting. Hours spent at desks, in traffic, or on the couch can lead to weak and inactive gluteal muscles. Dr. Sudhir Seth, Director of Orthopedics at MASSH Super Specialty Hospitals in New Delhi, explains that a sedentary lifestyle leads to muscle atrophy, where muscle is replaced by fat. “Prolonged inactivity can have a significant impact on our muscles, especially in the lower body,” he says. The result is a cascade of issues, with other parts of the body overcompensating for the weakened muscles.

How to Identify Dead Butt Syndrome?

Identifying Dead Butt Syndrome is simple. A quick test, such as standing on one leg, can reveal weak glutes if your hip dips to one side. Struggling to feel your glutes during workouts is another sign that these muscles may need attention.

 How to Fix It?

To combat this growing issue, regular physical activity is essential. Strengthening exercises like squats, lunges, and bridges can help reactivate glutes. Taking breaks from sitting, maintaining good posture, and following a balanced diet rich in protein and vitamins will also support muscle health. After all, staying active is key to keeping your body in alignment starting with your glutes.
