The Supreme Court on Tuesday told the governments of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Haryana to follow Delhi’s example and ban firecrackers within a month. The court was hearing a case about air pollution in Delhi. It noted that Delhi had already submitted a report showing it had completely banned the making, storing, and use of firecrackers.
The judges, Justices Abhay Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan asked the three states to issue similar orders under the Environment Protection Act. They also told the states to set up a system where people can complain if firecrackers are being used. In short, the court wants other states near Delhi to take strict action against firecrackers to help reduce pollution.
The Supreme Court reminded states that under Section 5 of the Environment Protection Act (EPA), the government can give strict orders to control pollution. Using this power, the court asked Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Haryana to make sure the firecracker ban is properly followed.
The court said that the states must:
1. Strictly enforce the ban on firecrackers.
2. Set up a system for people to report complaints within one month.
3. Regularly inform the public about the firecracker ban and the punishments for breaking it.
In simple terms, the court wants these states to not just announce a ban, but also make sure it’s actually followed and that people know about it.
