Rishikesh in Uttarakhand is preparing to welcome Bajrang Setu, a new glass suspension bridge being built across the Ganga. The bridge will take the place of the historic Lakshman Jhula, which was closed after it became unsafe due to age and heavy use over many decades.

Tourism officials expect the new bridge to become a major attraction once it opens to visitors in early 2026.

Lakshman Jhula, built in 1929, had long been one of Rishikesh’s most visited spots. According to legend, Lord Lakshman once crossed the river on a rope at this very place, giving the bridge its name. However, repair reports showed that the old bridge was no longer strong enough to handle the growing number of visitors and vehicles, leading to its closure.

Bajrang Setu is being built at the same location and is designed to be stronger, wider, and safer. The project, estimated at around ₹60 crore, will create a bridge 132 metres long and 8 metres wide. Construction began in 2022 and is expected to finish by December 2025.

The new bridge will feature glass walkways on both sides, each about 1.5 metres wide, made of 66-mm-thick reinforced glass. These walkways will let visitors look down and see the Ganga flowing below their feet.

The middle lane of the bridge is being designed for two-wheelers, allowing safe space for both pedestrians and riders. The towers supporting the bridge are inspired by the architecture of Kedarnath Temple, adding a cultural touch to the modern structure.

Part of a growing trend of glass bridges

Several other places in India are also building or opening glass bridges to attract tourists and offer scenic views.

Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh: A cantilever-style glass bridge is under construction in Bhedaghat, expected to be completed by early 2026. The bridge will be 18 metres long, include a viewing point, ticket area, canteen, and parking. The project cost is reported at ₹4.76 crore.

Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh: The Kailasagiri Skywalk rises 862 feet above ground. It reportedly cost around ₹7 crore and can hold 40 people at a time. Visitors pay ₹250–₹350 for entry.

Akkulam Tourist Village, Kerala: A 50-metre glass bridge has opened recently. It has three layers of laminated glass and can hold 20 visitors at once. The area also includes sky cycling, ziplining, musical fountains, laser shows, and an Air Force museum. Ticket prices are ₹200 for adults and ₹150 for children.

Bajrang Setu is expected to blend spiritual heritage with modern design, offering visitors a new way to experience the river and the city of Rishikesh.
