Bengaluru experienced record-breaking rainfall on Sunday evening, marking the highest single-day downpour in June in 133 years.
The Southwest Monsoon has hit Karnataka, bringing widespread rain to its coastal regions. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Bengaluru, predicting a cloudy sky with intermittent rain or thundershowers until June 5.
Record Rainfall in Bengaluru and Early Monsoon Arrival
According to a post by @Bnglrweatherman on platform X, Bengaluru recorded 140.7mm of rain over two days, surpassing the June average of 110.3mm. This historic rainfall has broken a record that stood for over a century.
The IMD's weekly forecast indicates that Bengaluru will continue to experience generally cloudy skies with more rain or thundershowers expected from June 2-5 and further rainfall predicted for June 8 and 9.
Sunday's torrential rain produced considerable waterlogging and traffic problems throughout the city. Hebbal Underpass, KFC Road to Gunjur Road, Chikkajala Kote Cross, Benniganahalli Railway Bridge, and Hebbal Circle all saw significant traffic congestion, disrupting metro services.
The early arrival of the monsoon in Karnataka, just three days after it advanced to Kerala on May 30, is a welcome change from last year's delayed onset
Last year, over 220 of the state's 236 taluks were declared drought-hit due to poor rainfall and a late monsoon, leading to extensive crop losses and heatwave conditions in March and April.
This early monsoon brings hope for a better agricultural season in Karnataka compared to the previous year's difficulties.
