The forest department has arrested five people in connection with the poaching of a fully pregnant wild buffalo (also known as a female buffalo) at Nilambur Pookottupadam. One person was earlier arrested and remanded in custody in connection with the incident. The accused will be produced in court on Wednesday.

The Forest Department arrested Pullara Nanippa alias Abu (47), Parothodika Mohammad Bustan (30), Talakottupuram Mohammad Ansif (23), Chemmala Aashiq (27) and Pilakkal Suhail (28) from Puncha.

The poaching took place in the Puncha forest. According to the Forest Department, the raid was carried out on the night of the 10th of this month. 25 kg of meat was seized from his house.

The hunt took place in the Puncha forest in the Chakkikuzhi forest station area under the Kalikavu range in the Nilambur South forest division. They shot and killed a fully pregnant wild buffalo while she was searching for a place to give birth near Poopathiripara at the top of Puncha private garden. They also cut and mutilated the full-grown embryo that was seen when the wire was ruptured.

They shared more than 200 kg of meat. Two skulls and other remains were dumped in various places in the forest. Wild buffalo bones, carcasses, embryos and hunting equipment were found in various parts of the forest. These were found by the investigation team as shown by the accused.

The gun belongs to Abu Nanippa. The Forest Department says he was the one who fired the shots. Veterinary Surgeon Dr. KN Noushadali examined the body. The accused were nabbed by Chakkikuzhi Deputy Range Officer K Zakir Hussain and his team led by Kalikavu Range Officer P Suresh.
