Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Guyana, marking the first visit by an Indian PM to the South American nation in 56 years.
Ceremonial Honors
He was warmly received at Georgetown airport by Guyanese President Mohamed Irfan Ali and over a dozen cabinet ministers. The two leaders exchanged pleasantries and shared a hug, symbolizing the growing friendship between the nations.
PM Modi was accorded a ceremonial welcome and guard of honor. He is set to address a special session of Guyana’s parliament, underscoring the importance of India-Guyana relations. Additionally, he will participate in the 2nd India-CARICOM Summit, engaging with leaders from Caribbean partner nations.
Strengthening ties
The visit, at the invitation of President Ali, highlights deepening ties. Earlier this year, he was the chief guest at the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in Indore, showcasing the mutual commitment to stronger collaboration.
India and Guyana share a robust developmental partnership, spanning health, renewable energy, defense, and connectivity. Recent initiatives include:
- Two HAL 228 aircraft were provided under a line of credit.
- Delivery of an ocean-going ferry built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers.
- Solar lighting for 30,000 indigenous households.
- Training of 800 Guyanese professionals under the ITEC program.
Guyana, the world’s fastest-growing economy, offers vast opportunities in hydrocarbons, healthcare, education, and defense. During the visit, PM Modi and President Ali will hold delegation-level talks to explore these possibilities and enhance bilateral cooperation.
At the India-CARICOM Summit, PM Modi will discuss key regional challenges and opportunities, focusing on climate change, trade, and sustainable development in the Caribbean region.
Guyana’s significant Indian-origin population adds a unique dimension to bilateral relations. The shared heritage and cultural connection provide a strong foundation for fostering deeper collaboration.
PM Modi’s visit aims to strengthen this historical bond, enhance economic partnerships, and support Guyana’s growth.
