India and Canada are bound by shared democratic values, a steadfast commitment to the rule of law, and vibrant people-to-people ties. PM Modi also mentioned the close relationship between India and Canada, rooted in democratic values and strong people-to-people connections, and said he looks forward to working together to create more opportunities for both nations.
Carney on relation with India
Carney’s election win is expected to improve strained relations between Ottawa and New Delhi. Ties between the two countries hit a low point during former PM Justin Trudeau’s term after his government alleged Indian involvement in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian citizen.
Carney, a former governor of both the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, had earlier signaled that he would work to rebuild relations with India if elected. Calling the India-Canada relationship “incredibly important,” he stressed the strong personal, economic, and strategic connections between the two nations.
“The Canada-India relationship is important on many levels, personally, economically, and strategically,” Carney had said during his campaign.
Carney’s victory also comes at a time of global attention on Canada’s foreign policy. The election drew added focus due to former US President Donald Trump’s trade war with Canada, including tariffs on Canadian imports and provocative remarks suggesting Canada could become the 51st US state, an issue that featured prominently during the election campaign.
