Police have filed a case against a woman for allegedly hiding her Pakistani nationality to get a job in the Basic Education Department, officials said on Thursday. The case was registered at Azim Nagar police station after the education department submitted a complaint following an internal inquiry.
According to the police, the woman, identified as Mahira Akhtar, also known as Farzana, is accused of using forged documents to secure a government job. She was working as a teacher at a primary school in Kumhariya village. Officials said the inquiry revealed that she had presented herself as an Indian citizen, even though she was a Pakistani national.
Additional Superintendent of Police Anurag Singh said an FIR has been registered under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including sections 318(4), 336, 338, and 340, which relate to cheating and forgery. He said the woman is accused of obtaining a fake residence certificate to prove Indian citizenship and using it to get employment in the education department.
Police further explained that the woman’s background came under scrutiny during the departmental inquiry. According to officials, Mahira Akhtar had married a Pakistani national in 1979, after which she reportedly acquired Pakistani citizenship. Later, after getting divorced, she is alleged to have returned to India using a Pakistani passport.
Police said that after returning to India, she married a local man around 1985. Around the same period, she allegedly applied for and secured a job in the Basic Education Department by showing herself as an Indian citizen. Officials claim she continued working as a government teacher for several years without her nationality being questioned.
The matter came to light recently during an internal investigation by the education department. Once her Pakistani nationality was allegedly confirmed, the department first suspended her from service and later dismissed her. Following this, the department submitted a detailed report to the police, based on which the FIR was registered.
The Additional Superintendent of Police said that a detailed investigation is currently underway. Police are collecting documents and other evidence to verify the allegations. He added that no arrest has been made so far, and further action will depend on the findings of the investigation.
