Over 100 Indian railway stations to make healthcare accessible to travellers

Starting as a pilot project with 50 stations in March, the initiative is now broadening its scope to encompass an additional 61 locations nationwide.

Indian Railways prioritizes healthcare for passengers travelling across the country. To improve passenger well-being and provide easy access to cheap healthcare, the railways are establishing Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Kendras (PMBJKs) at stations.

This initiative began in August 2023 with a pilot operation that installed PMBJKs at 50 stations. The program’s effectiveness has resulted in a major expansion. A senior railroad official claimed that “an additional 61 PMBJKs will be allocated at locations across the country with pre-fabricated structures.” These outlets will offer passengers critical medicines and healthcare products (Janaushadhi products) at considerably reduced prices.

The official further explained, “We aim to provide quality medicines at affordable rates to the millions of daily visitors and passengers who use our railways. PMBJKs will not only make healthcare accessible but will also create employment opportunities and encourage entrepreneurship.”

Recognizing the importance of easy access, Indian Railways regards PMBJKs as a desirable passenger amenity. This means that these pharmacies will be located within stations in high-traffic locations such as circulating areas and concourses. This guarantees that both arriving and departing passengers can readily find them during their journey.

Operating a PMBJK requires particular requirements. Stalls are allocated via a transparent e-auction process run by the individual railway divisions. Successful bidders must obtain the required licenses and permits to operate a pharmacy and follow all requirements for keeping and distributing medication.

Furthermore, PMBJK operators must agree with the Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Bureau of India (the nodal body for PMBJKs) and its authorized distributors. This assures that the outlets sell authentic Janaushadhi items, which are noted for their quality and affordability.

The expansion of PMBJKs at railway stations provides numerous advantages. Travellers will have quick access to low-cost medications, allowing them to address health concerns as they arise throughout their journeys. This initiative supports affordable healthcare by making important healthcare goods available at reasonable prices, thereby aiding a larger segment of society.

Additionally, establishing and maintaining PMBJKs provides opportunities for entrepreneurship and job development. The project also promotes responsible business practices by promoting genuine Janaushadhi products, which ensures both quality and affordability.
