The Opposition INDIA bloc is likely to name DMK’s Rajya Sabha MP Tiruchi Siva as its candidate for the upcoming Vice Presidential election, sources said on Monday. The move is seen as a strategic attempt to counter the BJP-led NDA’s choice of Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan, also a Tamil Nadu leader, in the September 9 polls.

An official announcement on the INDIA bloc’s nominee is expected later in the day after Opposition leaders meet at Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence. The decision to pick Tiruchi Siva, if finalised, would be significant as it could strengthen the bloc’s influence in southern politics and secure support from regional parties.

The election comes after the sudden resignation of Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar, officially citing health reasons. However, sources indicated that differences with the BJP leadership may have contributed to his early exit.

Sources also says that the choice of Mr Siva could give the Opposition an edge, as his Tamil Nadu background directly counters the NDA’s push in the South. The DMK has already clarified that it would back only the INDIA bloc’s candidate, dismissing the BJP’s move to field a Tamil leader as “mere propaganda”.

DMK spokesperson TKS Elangovan said that projecting a Tamilian does not make the BJP pro-Tamil Nadu, accusing the ruling party of denying funds and support to the state. “Otherwise, the BJP is against Tamil Nadu. They are not giving proper funds. They are not supporting Tamil Nadu in all terms,” he told NDTV, adding that the BJP “does not want Tamil Nadu to prosper.”

On the other hand, Tamil Nadu BJP chief Nainar Nagendran called Mr Radhakrishnan’s nomination a matter of pride for the state. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also praised the NDA candidate, describing him as a leader who has “distinguished himself with dedication, humility, and intellect” throughout his public life.

After announcing Radhakrishnan’s candidature, BJP president JP Nadda had expressed hope that the Opposition would extend its support. However, with the INDIA bloc firm fielding its nominee, the Vice-Presidential election is set for a Tamil Nadu versus Tamil Nadu contest.
