The United States considers India its most essential partner, US ambassador-designate Sergio Gor said on Monday, as he announced that the next round of India-US trade talks will restart from Tuesday, January 12.
Speaking at the US Embassy in Delhi, Gor said both countries are committed to strengthening their partnership and working through differences together.
Gor highlighted the close personal relationship between Donald Trump and Narendra Modi, calling it genuine and strong.
"The United States and India are bound, not just by shared interests but by a relationship anchored at the highest levels. Real friends can disagree but always resolve their differences in the end," he said in his arrival speech.
He added that India’s size and importance make trade negotiations complex, but both sides remain determined.
Addressing questions about the ongoing India-US trade deal, Gor confirmed that discussions are actively continuing and that the next call between the two sides will take place soon.
"India is the world's largest nation. So it's not an easy task to get this across the finish line," he said, adding that efforts are being made to move negotiations forward.
Gor also said that President Trump may visit India in the coming year or two. He explained that his role as ambassador is to take the partnership between the two countries to a higher level.
"This is the intersection between the world's oldest democracy and the world's largest democracy," Gor said, recalling Trump’s previous visit to India and his friendship with Prime Minister Modi.
In another key announcement, Gor said that India will be invited to become a full member of the Pax Silica Alliance next month.
"I am pleased to announce that India will be invited to join this group of nations as a full member next month," he said.
The Pax Silica alliance is a US-led initiative aimed at building a secure and reliable silicon supply chain focused on innovation and resilience.
Reinforcing Washington’s position, Gor said India remains the United States’ most important strategic partner.
"No partner is more essential than India. In the months and years ahead, it is my goal as ambassador to pursue a very ambitious agenda," he said.
He added that the two nations will continue working together as strategic partners, bringing mutual respect and leadership to the table.
