Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has announced an increased reward of Rs 25,000 for good Samaritans who help road accident victims. This is five times more than the current reward of Rs 5,000.
Higher rewards for life-saving actions
At a road safety event in Nagpur with actor Anupam Kher, Nitin Gadkari explained why the reward for helping accident victims was increased. He said that the earlier amount of Rs 5,000 was too small to properly appreciate and encourage people who save lives during the critical first hour after an accident, called the Golden Hour.
The Golden Hour is the first hour after a road accident when giving medical help quickly can save someone’s life. A good Samaritan is anyone who helps injured people out of kindness without expecting any payment or reward.
Government to cover hospital expenses
Apart from the reward, the government will now pay hospital expenses of up to Rs 1.5 lakh for the first seven days for people injured in accidents. Nitin Gadkari said this help is not just for accidents on national highways but also for those on state highways.
The reward scheme for good Samaritans was first started in October 2021. The government hopes this initiative will motivate people to help accident victims quickly and without fear, saving more lives.
