The Mumbai Metro line 3, also known as the Aqua Line, opened for public use, marking a significant milestone as the city's first underground Metro service. This new Metro line connects the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) to Aarey Colony and was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) announced that this expansion of the Metro network aims to improve the daily lives of Mumbai residents.
Key features of Mumbai metro line 3
Mumbai Metro Line 3, which is also called the Colaba-Bandra-Seepz line, is a 33.5 km underground metro line. Out of this, a 12.44 km stretch is currently open to the public. The project has been developed at a cost of over ₹32,000 crore. This Metro line has ten stations: Aarey, Marol Naka, CSMIA T1 (Terminal 1), MIDC, SEEPZ, Sahar Road, CSMIA T2 (Terminal 2), Vidyanagari, Dharavi, and BKC. Among these, nine stations are underground, while Aarey station is the only ground-level station.
The MMRC has announced that a total of 96 daily trips will be conducted on this line, with each Metro train accommodating over 2,000 passengers. The trains will operate at a maximum speed of 85 km/h, with an average running speed of 35 km/h. The Metro service will run from 6:30 am to 10:30 pm on weekdays and from 8:30 am to 10:30 pm on weekends. Fares for the Metro will range from ₹10 to ₹50. Commuters can purchase tickets through an app or at physical counters. By next month, the National Common Mobility Card will also be valid across all Metro lines in Mumbai.
The Mumbai Metro Line 3 is expected to be fully operational by June 2025. Once completed, it is projected to reduce vehicular traffic by as much as 6.5 lakh trips daily, contributing to a smoother and more efficient transport system in the bustling city of Mumbai.
