Since January 2025, around 1,080 Indians have been deported from the United States, with nearly 62% returning on commercial flights, according to the Ministry of External Affairs.Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that India and the US work closely on migration and deportation issues, especially involving Indian nationals living in the US without legal status or those who travelled illegally. He added that India takes back its citizens once proper details are shared by US authorities.

Jaiswal also briefly commented on the current row involving the Trump administration and Harvard University, saying that the government is aware of the matter and is following the US government's new guidance on student and exchange visitor visas.The Ministry of External Affairs said that about 1,080 Indians have been sent back from the United States since January 2025. Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India accepts its citizens once proper information is shared and added that the welfare of Indian students abroad remains a top priority for the government. He also addressed concerns about a new US visa policy. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has directed embassies to stop scheduling new interviews for student visa applicants as the government plans stricter checks of social media profiles. This move may make it harder for foreign students to study in the US.

Mr Jaiswal said that while visa decisions are the US government’s right, India hopes Indian students are judged on merit and are able to join their academic programs on time. India is keeping a close watch on the situation.
