The 2025 Maha Kumbh Mela is set to conclude with over 1 crore devotees expected to attend the final Amrit Snan on Wednesday, coinciding with Mahashivratri. To manage the large crowd, the Uttar Pradesh government has put in place extensive security measures for the last day of the event. Since the Maha Kumbh began on January 13, nearly 64 crore devotees have already taken a holy dip at the Triveni Sangam, the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers.
So far, there have been five Amrit Snans - on January 13, 14, 29, February 3, and 12. With the final Amrit Snan approaching, an even larger influx of devotees is heading to Prayagraj, overwhelming trains, flights, and road routes. To ease the crowding, authorities have made special arrangements for pilgrims to take the holy dip tomorrow. The Phaphamau Ghat has been designated for devotees coming from Lucknow and Pratapgarh, while the Arail Ghat is reserved for those arriving from Rewan, Banda, Chitrakoot, and Mirzapur.
The Sangam Ghat will be specifically for devotees coming from Kaushambi. For security, no vehicles will be allowed in the Mela area, except those with parking passes for designated spots.
To manage the crowds, 40 police teams on motorbikes have been placed on major highways and routes leading to Prayagraj, with traffic diversions in place for smoother flow. High-ranking police officers will be stationed on the seven main roads leading to the city.
Since the last day of Kumbh falls on Mahashivratri, devotees can visit all the Shiva temples in Prayagraj, with extra police deployed to ensure safety and order.
At the start of the event, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had predicted that over 45 crore devotees would attend, a target that was reached by February 11. In the following days, that number went past 50 crore.
The Kumbh Mela takes place every four years at Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nashik, and every 12 years at Prayagraj. It attracts millions of pilgrims who believe that bathing in the holy rivers during this period frees them from the cycle of birth and death, granting them liberation.
