The West Bengal Joint Platform of Doctors (WBJPD) is set to begin a sit-in demonstration in Kolkata starting Tuesday, protesting the CBI's handling of the investigation into the rape and murder case at Kar Medical College and Hospital. The demonstration will continue until December 26 at Doreena Crossing, in the heart of the city.
The WBJPD, an umbrella group comprising five medical associations, is raising strong objections over the CBI's progress in the case.
"We also demand the immediate submission of the supplementary chargesheet by the CBI," said Dr. Punyabrata Gun, a joint convener of WBJPD.
He expressed frustration at the fact that two major suspects in the case were given bail last week: Sandip Ghosh, former principal of Kar Medical College, and Abhijit Mondal, former officer-in-charge of Tala police station. This decision was made after the CBI failed to file a chargesheet within the mandatory 90-day period.
The doctors are not just demanding a thorough investigation; they are also asking for urgent action in the form of a supplementary chargesheet. Along with this, they had sought permission from Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma to hold the 10-day demonstration without disrupting the traffic. Dr. Gun said that the protest would be peaceful and in compliance with all the legal guidelines.
This protest comes after a march by WBJPD on Saturday to the CBI office at CGO Complex in Salt Lake. The case that had the nation weeping, began with the death of a female doctor at the state-run Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9, sparking protests across the country.
The decision of the Sealdah court to grant bail to the two suspects has poured more fuel into the fire. It declared that the CBI failed to file the chargesheet within the 90-day period, and so the suspects were released. The protest by the doctors is due to the growing concerns over the speed of the investigation and their demand for justice.
As the WBJPD prepares for its sit-in, the doctors have made it clear that the demonstration will follow all legal and safety protocols. They have also requested the police to ensure the safety of everyone involved in the protest.
