Justice Joymalya Bagchi was sworn in as a judge of the Supreme Court. The Chief Justice of India (CJI), Sanjiv Khanna, administered the oath during a ceremony held at the Supreme Court premises. Other Supreme Court judges were also present to witness the event.

With Justice Bagchi’s appointment, the Supreme Court now has 33 judges, just one short of its full strength of 34.

Journey to the Supreme Court

Justice Bagchi has had a long and impressive career. He first became a judge in the Calcutta High Court on June 27, 2011. After serving there for nearly a decade, he was transferred to the Andhra Pradesh High Court on January 4, 2021. However, later that year, on November 8, 2021, he returned to the Calcutta High Court, where he continued to serve until his recent elevation to the Supreme Court.

He has been a high court judge for over 13 years. In the combined seniority list of all high court judges across India, including chief justices, he holds the 11th spot.

Future Chief Justice of India

Justice Bagchi is set to become the Chief Justice of India in 2031. According to the Collegium’s March 6 resolution, he will take over the role after the retirement of Justice KV Viswanathan on May 25, 2031. He will hold the position for a short tenure until his retirement on October 2, 2031.

The Collegium also noted that no judge from the Calcutta High Court has held the position of Chief Justice of India since Justice Altamas Kabir retired on July 18, 2013. Justice Bagchi’s upcoming appointment as CJI will mark the end of this long gap.
