According to reports, at Jadavpur University, 50 postgraduate mass communication students were awarded marks in one of their second-semester exam papers without any evaluation.

The students allegedly learned about this issue during a meeting with interim Vice-Chancellor Bhaskar Gupta at his office. They were informed that the marks they received for the Media Law and Ethics paper had been assigned without their answer scripts being checked. The exam was conducted in July, and the results were released in August.

Students revealed they initially went to Vice-Chancellor Gupta’s office to discuss delays in publishing results and concerns about the evaluation process.

Antara Das, one of the students, said, ‘It was at that time we were told a professor had submitted ‘unchecked’ answer scripts. I had got unexpectedly low marks, prompting me to file an RTI application to seek re-evaluation.’

Despite the seriousness of the matter, Vice-Chancellor Gupta has remained silent. Controller of Examinations Satyaki Bhattacharyya stated, “I am not authorized to comment on this matter. The Vice-Chancellor can address the issue.”

The head of the Journalism and Mass Communication Department, Partha Sarathi Chakraborty, mentioned that university officials would speak to the professor accused of not evaluating the answer scripts.

Joydeep Mukherjee, Dean of the Interdisciplinary Studies, Law, and Management Faculty, acknowledged the students’ grievances. He said, ‘The professor concerned has been called. Based on university rules, the next course of action will be taken after discussing with the Vice-Chancellor.’

JU officials reportedly discovered the issue after students applied for reviews and filed RTI queries. During the review, it was revealed that 50 answer scripts had gone unchecked.

Abhishek Das, the assistant professor implicated in the matter, denied the allegations, stating, “The papers were duly checked and submitted.”
