It's no secret that India is ramping up its efforts to secure a stronghold in the cruise tourism market. One significant stride has been the approval of launching the Beypore (Kozhikode)–Kochi–Dubai cruise ship service. The central government has recognized the demand from expatriate passengers and given the nod to this 4000-km route, providing an affordable and scenic alternative to air travel.
The service is set to kick-off before the December school break, promising an inexpensive, time-saving alternative that is significantly more affordable than standard airfares. With one-way tickets ranging from INR 10,000 (Dh 442) to INR 15,000 (Dh 663), passengers can carry up to 200 kg of luggage at significantly reduced costs, making the cruise an attractive option for travelers. In partnership with cargo companies, the vessel aims to accommodate up to 1,250 passengers, shortening the journey down to approximately three days.
According to a report by Manorama on December 15, 2023, the Central government's approval of the Beypore-Kochi-Dubai cruise service marks a significant milestone for cruise enthusiasts in Kerala, ushering in a new era of luxury sea travel for Malayalis. The Union Shipping Minister, Sarbananda Sonowal, announced that preparations for the launch are underway, responding to frequent requests from non-resident Indian passengers. He shared this information while answering a question from Ernakulam MP Hibi Eden.
The President of the Indian Association Sharjah, YA Rahim, told Khaleej Times, “The aim is to have the service fully operational before the school break in December. We want to make sure that Indian expats in the UAE can travel home without being burdened by exorbitant airline charges."
The incoming cruise service could be a welcomed solution for non-resident Keralites who often face sky-high airfares in their travels between Kerala and Dubai. This new mode of transport requires merely a third of an airplane ticket's expenses. Additionally, passengers can carry up to three times the luggage currently permitted on airplanes, the Manorama report highlighted.
Government Initiatives and Collaboration
In a move to realize this cruise service, dialogues took place across key forums, including the Shipping Corporation of India, NoRKA-Roots, and the Kerala Maritime Board. The fully equipped vessel, initially built in Kochi for another state, has now been re-outfitted for this crucial Kerala Gulf service, with a capacity to handle up to 1,250 passengers.
Shielding Expatriates from Soaring Airfares
Many expatriates have felt the pinch of extortionate airfares during heavy travel seasons. This cruise service aims to offer a realistic and economical solution, allowing travelers to secure one-way tickets for as low as ₹10,000. Teaming up with cargo companies will further bolster the feasibility and affordability of the service, the report added. It's important to note that several airlines are offering flight tickets from Kerala to Dubai between ₹11,000 and ₹20,000 for economy class.
