The Wikimedia Foundation, which runs Wikipedia, has shared a list of the most-viewed articles on English Wikipedia in 2024. Three topics from India made it to the global top 25: the Indian Premier League (IPL), the 2024 Indian general election, and the Bollywood sci-fi movie Kalki 2898 AD, starring Deepika Padukone.

The IPL was the highest-ranked Indian topic, coming in 6th place with over 24.5 million views. The general election, which grabbed a lot of attention from voters and political enthusiasts, was in 10th place. Kalki 2898 AD ranked 18th with nearly 14.6 million views, showing India's love for cinema.

India continues to be a major contributor to Wikipedia's global success. With over 900 million monthly page views, India ranks among the top ten countries in Wikipedia readership. It also has the third-largest number of English Wikipedia contributors, reinforcing its important role in the Wikimedia community. 

This year election-related content witnessed a significant rise on Wikipedia marking the people’s choice to read for the trustworthy, timely information on governance. Meanwhile, cricket and Bollywood continued to dominate in the search list pointing to the demand and interest of people in these domains.

A recent survey view that 91% of Indians appreciate Wikipedia, with 88% considering it a reliable resource for education, work, and staying informed. This reflects Wikipedia's importance in India, where it contributes over 70% of South Asia's input to Wikimedia projects.

In a global context, the most-viewed article of 2024 was "Deaths in 2024," with over 44.4 million views, followed by articles on Kamala Harris, the U.S. presidential election, and Donald Trump. English Wikipedia received over 76 billion views in the first ten months of the year.

A spokesperson for the Wikimedia Foundation stated, "The most popular Wikipedia articles are a reflection of our world, marking our collective interests at a unique moment in time." From politics to pop culture, Wikipedia continues to be a trusted source for millions around the globe.
