India has been grappling lately with a surge in pro-Khalistan activity, notably during Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's recent visit to New Delhi. These elements have reportedly stepped up their activities, even as India has raised its concerns about the apparent safe haven they find in Canada. Traces of these disturbing developments have been observed in gatherings such as a Khalistani referendum held at a gurudwara in Vancouver. The situation has escalated to the point where threats have been issued against some of India's highest-ranking officials.

Undermining Security and Unity

The Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), a US-based group banned by India, is seemingly at the forefront of these malintentions. Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, the leader of SFJ, reportedly threatened Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and External Affairs Minister Jaishankar, among other top leaders. Further, he mentioned those involved in the assassination of Hardeep Singh Nijjar and promised retribution. For those unaware, Nijjar was a Khalistani terrorist, wanted by the Indian government and killed in Canada this year. Pannu spoke at an event attended by several thousand people, using inflammatory rhetoric against India.

India's Response: Concerns Raised at the G20 Summit

“PM Modi conveyed our strong concerns about continuing anti-India activities of extremist elements in Canada. They are promoting secessionism and inciting violence against Indian diplomats, damaging diplomatic premises, and threatening the Indian community in Canada and their places of worship," the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said.

For their part, the Indian leadership has been proactive in addressing the issue. As part of his dialogue with Trudeau, PM Narendra Modi emphasized the perils of extremist activities occurring in Canada. These actions include hate promotion, fomenting disunity, inciting violence, and physically threatening Indian diplomats and communities.

Canada's Stance

Trudeau, in turn, stated that while Canada advocates for the right to peaceful protest, the protection against violence and hatred remains a priority. This stance is crucial as proactive measures against these extremist elements and support for India's concerns will be instrumental in preserving peace, unity, and respect for international law. As these developments continue to evolve, vigilance maintains utmost importance.
