The special session of Parliament, starting next week, brings more than just new agendas. It is rolling out a splash of colors in the form of new uniforms for its staff, tinged with an Indian flavor. The attire, which includes traditional 'Nehru jackets' and khaki trousers, has been tailored by the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT).

Not just another change of attire, this time the sartorial shift aims to capture the essence of Indian culture.

A Splash of Colors

Nehru jackets: Leaving behind the bureaucrats' bandhgala suits, the staffers will now wear a deep pink or magenta Nehru jacket. The jackets are also paired with matching shirts, beautifully designed with a lotus flower.
Khaki pants: Adding a hint of India’s official essence, the employees will pair the jacket with khaki-colored trousers.
The Marshals: The uniform of the Marshals isn't left untouched either. Their new attire includes wearing traditional Manipuri turbans.
Security Personnel: Taking inspiration from the military, security personnel will now wear camouflage dresses instead of the customary safari suits.

Capturing Indian Culture

This alternation in the uniforms will coincide with the movement of the parliamentary staff to the new building on September 19, just after the onset of the special session. The new building, which will officially come into use on the day of Ganesh Chaturthi following a small pooja, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier this year on May 28.

The “Special Session” Announcement - Parliament

The “special session” of Parliament, from September 18 to 22, was announced on August 31 by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi. However, the minister kept the session's specifics under wraps, leading to much speculation.

The special session, commencing in the old establishment, progressively changing to the new home a day later, is planned to hold five sittings. The Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha secretariats affirm that they will inform members about the provisional calendar separately.
