India strongly criticised Pakistan during a meeting of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Tuesday. India said Pakistan’s political problems at home are closely linked to its long history of supporting terrorism across borders.
What India said
India’s representative at the UN, Ambassador Harish Parvathaneni, spoke at an open debate titled “Leadership for Peace.” During his speech, he talked about the current political situation in Pakistan. He mentioned that former Prime Minister Imran Khan is in jail, his political party has been banned, and the country’s military has taken control of democratic processes.
Ambassador Parvathaneni said Imran Khan has been in prison since August 2023 in a corruption case involving about EUR 190 million. He also faces cases under Pakistan’s Anti-Terrorism Act related to protests that took place on May 9, 2023. The Indian envoy added that a UN expert has raised concerns about Khan being treated badly in jail.
India accused Pakistan of disrespecting the will of its people. The ambassador said Pakistan shows democracy in a strange way, by putting a former prime minister in jail, banning the ruling party, and allowing the military to take power through constitutional changes. He criticised the 27th constitutional amendment, which gave lifetime legal protection to Pakistan’s army chief.
India also strongly rejected Pakistan’s comments about Jammu and Kashmir. Ambassador Parvathaneni said Pakistan’s repeated references to the issue show its unhealthy obsession with harming India. He clearly stated that Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh are integral parts of India.
He added that a country which is currently a non-permanent member of the UNSC should act responsibly instead of pushing divisive agendas at international forums. India further called Pakistan a global centre of terrorism. The ambassador said Pakistan has supported terror groups for decades. Referring to the April 2025 terror attack in Pahalgam, where 26 civilians were killed, he said such incidents prove Pakistan’s continued role in cross-border terrorism.
India also explained its decision to put the Indus Waters Treaty on hold. The ambassador said India signed the treaty 65 years ago in good faith. However, Pakistan violated its spirit by fighting wars and sponsoring terror attacks against India. India will keep the treaty suspended until Pakistan completely stops supporting terrorism.
Apart from criticising Pakistan, India also demanded urgent reforms of the UN Security Council. The ambassador said the current system is outdated and does not reflect today’s world. Quoting the UN Secretary-General, he said old systems cannot solve modern problems. India called for a more fair, transparent, and inclusive UNSC, with better representation for developing countries and regions that are currently ignored.
