India is planning to start talks with Russia to buy two major defence systems, the Su-57 fighter jets and the S-500 missile defence system, during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to India this week, according to a Bloomberg report. Putin is scheduled to arrive on December 4 for a two-day state visit, during which he will hold important meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

This visit will mark the 23rd India-Russia annual summit. Over the years, India and Russia have held 22 such meetings, alternating between the two countries. Officials say this year’s summit is expected to bring major outcomes that will further strengthen the long-standing strategic partnership between the two nations.

India’s defence plans

India is expected to discuss the potential purchase of two major Russian defence systems, the Su-57, Russia’s fifth-generation stealth fighter jet, and the S-500, the country’s most advanced long-range missile defence system.

India already operates more than 200 Russian-made fighter jets and owns multiple S-400 air defence systems, which were used during past military tensions with Pakistan. The possible addition of Su-57 fighters and S-500 systems would significantly boost India’s air defence and combat capability.

Earlier reports suggested that India was planning to issue a Request for Proposal (RFP) to Russia to acquire 300 additional missiles for its existing S-400 systems. India is also looking to secure five S-400 squadrons during the Modi-Putin talks on December 5.

According to the Times of India, New Delhi may even consider buying two to three squadrons of Su-57 jets. Russia has been promoting the Su-57 as a strong alternative to the US-made F-35 Lightning II, making it an attractive option for countries looking for advanced fighter aircraft without relying on the United States.

Diplomatic Significance

Putin is visiting India at the invitation of PM Modi. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said the visit will help set the direction for deepening the “Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership” between the two countries.

President Droupadi Murmu will also host a banquet in honour of Putin. The MEA said that the summit will allow both sides to review progress in defence, trade, and energy cooperation, and also discuss major regional and global issues.
