In the most recent edition of the U.S. News & World Report's "Best Countries Ranking 2024," India has attained the 33rd position, experiencing a decline of three places from its 2023 ranking. This survey assessed 89 nations based on 73 distinct attributes, offering a thorough evaluation of each country's performance across multiple categories, including power, business openness, cultural influence, adventure, agility, heritage, entrepreneurship, and quality of life.

Switzerland has once again secured the top rank in the listings, reaffirming its status as the best country in the world for the third consecutive year. The European nation’s consistent excellence in critical areas such as quality of life, entrepreneurship, and social responsibility has played a significant role in its success in this survey.

Japan has made a notable advancement, rising four positions to achieve second place, particularly excelling in the entrepreneurship and movers categories. Conversely, the United States improved its standing by two spots, now holding the third position and leading in the power and agility categories.

India's worst rating was in the category of social purpose (77th rank). Similarly adventure(58th rank), open for business (46th rank), quality of life (40th rank), and agility (40th rank) were some of the other bad performing categories. India did its best in Movers (7th rank), Heritage (10th rank), and Power (12th rank) category. Remaining were cultural influence (34th rank) and entrepreneurship (32nd rank).

Social purpose mainly includes attributes like care about animal rights, human rights, environment, religious freedom, gender equality, racial equity, trustworthiness, and well-distributed political power. Movers count in the attributes that are different, distinctive, dynamic, and unique.

The top ten countries in the ranking include Canada, Australia, Sweden, Germany, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, and Denmark. The remaining positions in the top 25 are filled by Norway, France, the Netherlands, Singapore, Italy, China, the UAE, South Korea, Spain, Finland, Austria, Iceland, Belgium, Ireland, and Qatar.

Despite India's drop in the overall ranking, its performance in certain categories reveals a more detailed perspective. The country ranks 33rd, falling behind several Asian competitors, including China, South Korea, Singapore, and Japan.

The methodology employed in the survey, crafted by the Wharton Business School, considers a range of factors that influence a nation's overall performance and reputation. Through analyzing these metrics, policymakers and stakeholders can acquire essential insights to elevate India's position on the international stage. 

As India seeks to improve its ranking, it encounters both challenges and opportunities. The nation's substantial population, varied demographics, and intricate socio-economic environment pose distinct challenges that necessitate focused interventions and strategic planning.
