The list of the world's most peaceful nations was recently published by the 2023 Global Peace Index (GPI). The 17th edition of the Global Peace Index (GPI), published by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), assigned a peace index score to 163 autonomous states and territories. The paper claimed that it provided the most thorough data-driven analysis to date on trends in peace, its economic significance, and how to create peaceful communities.
The GPI covered 99.7 percent of the world's population by using 23 quantitative and qualitative indicators. It measured the peace levels across three domains: Societal safety and security; Ongoing domestic and international conflict; and Militarisation. The data for this year indicates a 0.42 percent decline in the average level of world peace. This is the thirteenth decline in peace in the last fifteen years, with 84 countries experiencing improvements and 79 experiencing declines in 2022.
India has moved up two spots to claim the 126th slot overall in the rankings. According to the report, improvements in violent crime, relations between neighbors, and political instability were responsible for India's 3.5% increase in overall peace over the previous year. According to GIP, "the decrease in cross-border incidents of violence and ceasefire violations with Pakistan and China in 2022" is what caused the improvement in the indicator of ties between neighboring nations.
Among other countries, China, Sri Lanka, the United States of America, and Pakistan have been ranked 80, 107, 131, and 146, respectively. The top spot was yet again claimed by Iceland, followed by Denmark, Ireland, New Zealand, and Austria.
The report also noted an important point which showed that 'over the last 15 years, the world has become less peaceful, with the average country score deteriorating by five percent'.
