India has blocked the official X (formerly Twitter) account of the Pakistan Government from being viewed inside the country. This step was taken just a day after India blamed Pakistan for having “cross-border linkages” in the recent Pahalgam terror attack, which killed 26 people and left many hurt.
When people in India try to open the account @GovtofPakistan, they now see a message saying:
“@GovtofPakistan has been withheld in IN in response to a legal demand.”
What does ‘withheld’ mean on X?
The social media platform X says an account is “withheld” in a country when it receives a legal request from that country’s authorities. If the request is valid and specific, the platform can hide that content only in that country.
According to X’s rules:
“Such withholdings will be limited to the specific jurisdiction that has issued the valid legal demand or where the content has been found to violate local law(s).”
This means users in other countries may still be able to view the account, but people in India cannot.
On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a meeting with top officials in the Cabinet Committee on Security. After this meeting, the Indian government announced several strong steps to respond to the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam.
Blocking the Pakistan Government’s X account is one of those actions.
