The Gujarat government has earned Rs 94.19 lakh as revenue through the sale of liquor at Gandhinagar's GIFT City in more than one year. This was presented by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel himself, who is also in charge of the state's Prohibition and Excise department, in a reply to a question asked by Congress MLA Amit Chavda.
In his question, Chavda had inquired about the number of licenses that had been issued for the sale of liquor in GIFT City until January 31, 2025. Chief Minister Patel answered that two companies—West India Recreation Projects Private Limited and The Grand Mercure—have received licenses to sell liquor there.
The government authorized the consumption of liquor on December 30, 2023, within GIFT City for people living or working there. This was a rare exception in Gujarat, which otherwise follows strict prohibition laws.
Since the easing of regulations, GIFT City has seen the sale of 3,324 bulk liters of spirits, 470 bulk liters of wine, and 19,915 bulk liters of beer in the last two years. The combined revenue generated from these sales has amounted to Rs 94.19 lakh.
GIFT City's liquor policy is unique in Gujarat, where liquor is otherwise prohibited. The figures for revenue and sales data show the increasing popularity of the city, which has been marketed as a global finance and technology destination.
