IITs extend out to alumni network; 38% of IITians have not yet been placed this year: Report

Offering students jobs within their businesses is not the only attraction. The TOI claims that in addition to asking previous students to help their juniors, it also entails making recommendations, references, and even offering internship chances.

Based on data gathered through RTI applications submitted by IIT Kanpur alumnus Dheeraj Singh, The Times of India stated that approximately 38% of students across 23 IITs are still unplaced as of this writing.

“Over 7,000 IIT students are yet to be placed via campus this year across all the 23 IITs. Two years ago, this unplaced number was half at 3,400. While the number of students sitting in placements has gone up 1.2 times, the number of unplaced students has doubled to 2.3 times in two years,” Singh was quoted as saying.

One challenge remains as the placement session at IIT-Delhi for the academic year 2023–24 draws to a close. Nearly 400 pupils are still unemployed in spite of their best efforts. Given this, the institute made contact with the alumni network (as indicated by the RTI replies) in an attempt to help these graduating students find employment.

Delhi’s IIT
IIT Delhi has made contact with its former students, asking them to help place the current batch or suggest graduates to employers looking to hire engineers. “We kindly request that you think about providing your assistance to our students on behalf of the Office of Career Services (OCS) at IIT-Delhi. According to the institute, “Your help in this area will be greatly appreciated and will be crucial in assisting these students as they embark on their careers.

Bombay’s IIT
IIT-Bombay has also reached out to its alumni for assistance. Despite the fact that placements are still in progress and will run through the end of June, 250 candidates, or around 10% of the batch, have not yet found work.

According to data from an RTI that Singh filed, 329 candidates were unemployed last year; of these, 171 were from the class of 2022 and were unable to find work.

Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) reached out to its alumni as well. About two months ago, BITS and many other institutes began reaching out to their alumni, some more prominently than others and some more casually.

Vice-Chancellor of the BITS Group V Ramgopal Rao was cited as saying, “There has been a decrease of 20% to 30% in placements across the board.” Even if a facility advertises complete placement, the calibre of jobs on offer could fall short of expectations. introduces ChatGPT and other large language models, which have an effect on hiring procedures.
